Balatro has sold 1,000,000 copies in its first month. Playstack, the publisher of Balatro revealed that a mobile edition is also in development.
Balatro, a game created by LocalThunk and a solo developer, is a Roguelike that requires players to use poker hands in order to meet score criteria. This allows them to advance through a number of rounds. They’ll also spend money on new cards that have special effects, while also collecting Jokers which grant a variety of trigger and passive abilities.
Since its launch on February 20, the game has received widespread praise and popularity. In my review I gave it a score of 9.5. “Balatro” is an entertaining and ingenious roguelike, and my favourite game of this year. It has almost become an obsession. Everything feels designed to make you want to try again and again, because the next run might be your last. “Even after many hours of playing, Balatro is still the biggest challenge I face: stopping.”
LocalThunk wrote in a release that announced the million-milestone.
I’m grateful for all of the people and players who made it happen. It’s amazing how many people are enjoying my game. I can’t believe it. It’s a blessing that my hobby can become a profession. “Thank you.”
Balatro can be downloaded for PC, Switch, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 4. The release date for mobile versions is not yet known.
